Most airlines taking cautious approach to next gen aircraft

Despite overwhelming concern for fuel supply and costs, most airlines surveyed by a joint CIT/Forbes study indicated that they are likely to take a wait-and-see approach to how the next generation aircraft perform before making a commitment.

CIT Transportation Finance President Jeff Knittel discussed the survey during a recent media briefing at the International Society of Transport Aircraft Traders conference (ISTAT). In the survey, 68% of those surveyed said they would wait and see how new aircraft perform while 32% would be the first to acquire or lease the new aircraft......

CAAC Administrator Li Jiaxiang stated China will not reduce its orders for Boeing and Airbus aircraft as he believes locally produced aircraft are "still far away from satisfying domestic needs". The CAAC will decide the scale of production for the C919, being developed locally by COMAC, as the programme progresses over the next five years.

Also in China, Harbin Hafei Airbus Manufacturing Centre commenced operation on 28-Feb-2011. The plant will......

Airbus to up A330 production, Boeing may produce more than 10 B787s per month

Responding to high levels of market demand, Airbus announced plans to increase production from eight to nine aircraft per month by early 2012 and 10 a month by 2Q2013. The A330 has won orders over the past few years, as Boeing customers seek to fill fleet gaps due to the three-year delay to the B787.

The production decision will not affect A330 deliveries 2011. It does place more pressure on aircraft parts suppliers that are struggling to deal with production increases across many Airbus and Boeing models.

Airbus has also announced that it has cancelled an order for 12 A330 freighters from......

AirAsia X and Jetstar go head-to-head with long-haul expansion plans

AirAsia X and Jetstar are looking to compete head-to-head in their low-cost long-haul expansion plans from the Asia Pacific region, with both carriers announcing plans to launch new routes. Over recent weeks, AirAsia X has been busy announcing new long-haul routes to Europe and the South Pacific, while Jetstar has been discussing plans to focus on expanding in Asia.

AirAsia X looks to publicly list to expand long-haul fleet

AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman-Rani stated in Dec-2010 that the carrier may sell shares in Europe and Asia as early as 2011 to fund its fleet expansion. According to Mr Osman-Rani, a larger fleet would allow it to expand its route network to under-served markets. The long-haul carrier plans to triple its fleet to 35 over the next six years as it adds more international destinations......

The manufacturer has revised its growth forecast for 2010 to 2029 from 4.7% to 4.8%, and consequently upped its forecast to almost 26,000 passenger and freighter aircraft, representing an increase of around 900 units from last year's forecast. The value of the market outlook has also been raised from USD3.1 to USD3.2 trillion......

777 Rate Rises As A350XWB Gets Ready To Slide

Boeing’s decision to increase production on the 777 line to some 8.3 units per month by the start of the first quarter of 2013 has been on the cards for some time now.

The crippling and prolonged delays in certifying the 787 will of course play a key part in compensation for some customers, but there are sizeable 777 announcements due over the next 18 months too (perhaps around the Paris Air Show?) some of which will have no......

Spiegel: EADS chief says Airbus A350 has used up margin

Airbus has used up much of its time margin for its key A350 XWB program and widened its projected delivery window, Louis Gallois, chief executive officer of Airbus parent EADS, told Germany's Spiegel International in an interview published Friday.

"Airbus has already used up a large part of its built-in time buffer," he said. "Some of Airbus's subcontractors were late in delivering, or details in the design of some components had to be changed. To put it bluntly, we have now somewhat widened the initial delivery window for the A350 -- from July 2013 to......

Airbus Begins A350 Composite Fuselage Work

Airbus has begun carbon fiber placement for the first A350XWB section as the company ramps up activities in preparation for the start of final assembly next year.

Work on the so called Section 19 rear fuselage section now being manufacturered at Airbus’s Illescas, Spain production facility measures 5.5 meter-long, 56. sq. meter fuselage barrel is due to be completed in the coming weeks, Airbus says.

The tapering fuselage structure is the only area where Airbus has opted for a......

Emirates Seeks Longer-Range Airbus A350 as Boeing Stalls on 777

Emirates, the world’s biggest airline by international traffic, urged Airbus SAS to boost the range of the biggest version of its new A350 wide-body plane as Boeing Co. ponders a redesign of the competing 777 model.

Emirates, whose outstanding orders for the 777 will make it the twin-jet’s biggest user, needs higher-capacity aircraft for its longest inter-continental routes, Tim Clark, the Dubai-based airline’s president, said today in an interview in Paris.

Clark has ordered 20 350-seat A350-1000s, a model he says can’t reach Los Angeles from Dubai in the three-class layout that Emirates prefers. The Boeing planes that it currently uses on the route are based on a less efficient 20-year-old design, with the 354-seat 777-300ER at the limits of its range, curbing the payload, and the 777-200LR limited to......

Hong Kong Airlines confirmed an order for 15 A350 XWBs and ten A330-200s, firming up a deal struck at this year's Farnborough Air Show. The A350 order represents an=other big win for Airbus’ new widebody twin in Hong Kong, following on from Cathay Pacific's Sep-2010 announcement.
