Weak Mar-2011 traffic does not darken Thai's outlook or ambitous fleet renewal plan

Thai Airways remains bullish on its outlook for 2011 despite reporting traffic declines for 1Q2011 and remains committed to embarking on a massive fleet renewal programme. The Thai carrier reported a 4.4% drop in RPKs for Mar-2011 despite a 3.3% increase in capacity. As a result, Thai’s load factor slipped......

THAI advised to hire purchase

The Transport Ministry has assigned Thai Airways International to buy 37 new aircraft on hire purchase instead of leasing them.

The move came after the ministry told THAI to thoroughly compare the information and figures between hire purchase of the 37 new aircraft and leasing them.

Supot Saplorm, the transport permanent secretary, said THAI earlier proposed a plan to......

Boeing in air assault for orders

Boeing is in town to compete against Airbus in supplying an initial new fleet of 37 jetliners worth a combined US$14 billion to Thai Airways International (THAI). The US plane maker is pitching three types of aircraft - the 800 and 900 series of the B787 Dreamliner, the long-haul B777-300ER and the single-aisle B737-800.

Its main selling point is early availability for THAI's first block of its dual-phase fleet renewal programme.

"The advantage we have: our aircraft are available sooner," Randy Tinseth, the vice-president for marketing at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in Bangkok yesterday. The company is offering to make available......

Airbus may secure 100 aircraft order, Boeing re-jigging some B787 deliveries

Airbus is expected to announce an order for 100 aircraft from China this week, following a state visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao to France. The order would be a major boost for the manufacturer, which is lagging well behind rival Boeing in aircraft orders this year. Airbus has 328 firm orders for the year to Sep-2010, compared with Boeing’s 478.

Boeing recently lifted......

THAI to lease eight Boeings

Thai Airways International has clinched a deal to lease eight brand-new large-capacity long-haul Boeing jets from BOC Aviation as part of its ongoing fleet renewal.

The leasing unit of Bank of China was chosen over two other contenders, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) and Dublin-based AWAS, which were unable to make available the required eight B777-300ER planes.

DAE could only spare four while AWAS has two for leasing to THAI, according to THAI insiders. Under the deal sealed recently, BOC will lease the aircraft for 12 years at......

The SET-listed flag carrier's board yesterday approved four borrowing agreements as THAI proceeds with a 15-billion-baht recapitalisation with new share offerings and a planned debenture issue.THAI only recently secured a loan of 8 billion baht from Siam Commercial Bank at terms that president Piyasvasti Amranand described as very good.

The borrowing includes......

THAI to make 'bulk' purchases

Thai Airways International (THAI) plans to acquire new aircraft in bulk in the future as it rejuvenates its ageing fleet.

THAI divides jet orders between Boeing, Airbus

Thai Airways International agreed yesterday agreed to split the orders for 15 new wide-body jets almost equally between Airbus and Boeing, in a decision that would balance the presence of both planemakers in the flag carrier's fleet. Europe's Airbus will supply seven medium-haul A330-330 aircraft, while its US rival will supply eight long-range B777-300ER series jets.
THAI executives said the decision to split the orders was made entirely on commercial and technical grounds without any political influence from Europe or the US, allegations that had shrouded past jet purchases.
President Piyasvasti Amranand said Airbus offered seven A330-300s, for 31 billion baht, "well below" what the airline had budgeted. However, the prices exclude engines, seats, inflight entertainment systems and spare engines. The A330-300, with a catalogue price of......

THAI talks new jets with Airbus, Boeing

Thai Airways International has begun talks with Airbus and Boeing to negotiate discounts and easier terms on orders for 15 high-capacity planes worth more than 35 billion baht. THAI president Piyasvasti Amranand had separate discussions with top executives at the two aviation companies last week at the annual meeting of the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) in Berlin. He declined to give details of the talks but indicated that the flag carrier's decision on aircraft acquisition would depend largely on the attractiveness of the financial packages offered by the two planemakers.
Preliminary discussions have already taken place between lower-level managers at THAI and Airbus and Boeing, but the Berlin meetings saw negotiations take a higher level. Talks will centre on the acquisition of eight long-haul and seven medium-range jetliners with prompt delivery being a critical requirement. The choices boil down to either......
