Boeing: We'd rather have a Boeing 737 replacement later than a re-engined 737 sooner

Boeing is strongly leaning toward producing an all-new successor to the Boeing 737 at the end of the decade rather than try to re-engine the existing line with a more efficient engine, Boeing's top executive said Wednesday.

Speaking on Boeing's earnings call, chairman and chief executive Jim McNerney said the aircraft manufacturer believes it can keep the current line......

Boeing reaffirms mid-year target for 737 decision

Boeing has restated its aim of announcing its plans for the 737 - whether to re-engine or to go for a completely new, clean-sheet design - by the middle of the year.

However, according to John Tracy, Boeing's chief technology officer, the decision will be guided by the availability of engineering resources, given the potential demands from a 777 update and the development of......

Buckingham: Boeing to weigh multiple factors in making 737 replacement decision

Boeing's decision on whether to launch an all-new aircraft to replace the 737NG will be driven by technology and risk assessment, according to a Buckingham Research client note.

The New York-based firm said that the business case for the narrowbody replacement has not been made yet, likely pushing the program's announcement to next year (ATW Daily News, April 18). "In order to meet airline demand, a new airplane has to offer a......

Boeing shelved 737RE–new airplane appears to be shelved for now, too

It’s stunning news: Boeing may be shelving, at least for now, the prospect of a new airplane widely anticipated to be announced at the Paris Air Show.

Boeing previously shelved the prospective 737RE (Re-Engine).

Buckingham Research, a boutique New York investment bank with a good track record of forecasting Boeing moves, issued a note today in which it said Boeing is......

Analyst thinks Boeing will back away from all-new 737

Buckingham Research, a boutique New York investment bank with a good track record of forecasting Boeing moves, has issued a note in which it says the Seattle airframer is moving away from unveiling an all-new 737 replacement.

With the relative success of Airbus's re-engined A320neo, Boeing has been forced to......

Why is Leahy so keen for Boeing's "me-too" neo?

Airbus's chief salesman John Leahy at "full chat" is like poetry in motion. If anyone was put on this planet to sell aeroplanes, Leahy was, and there's no hiding his excitement now he's got his hands on his latest gizmo, the A320neo.

A bit like Sebastian Vettel in his Red Bull F1 car, Leahy clearly believes his "equipment" is on a......

Airbus exec: A321 is ideal Boeing 757 replacement

European plane maker Airbus would like to get its re-engined A320neo family into service in 2015 and expects the largest of the new planes to win orders from existing Boeing 757 operators, a top executive said Thursday.

“The neo is planned to enter service in the middle of 2016,” Airbus Americas President and Chief Executive Officer Barry Eccleston noted at the J.P. Morgan Aviation, Transportation & Defense Conference, in New York. “We’d really like to get the airplane in service by the end of......

Southwest CEO: 'Anxious' for narrowbody replacement solution

Southwest Airlines is "anxious to have some answers this year" regarding a narrowbody replacement, Chairman, President and CEO Gary Kelly said Tuesday at the JP Morgan Aviation, Transportation and Defense Conference in New York, available via webcast.

"It remains to be seen where the aerospace industry is headed in terms of optimizing the size of a narrowbody aircraft, and we're very interested to see where that settles," Kelly said. "What is inevitable is that the next-generation aircraft for Southwest Airlines … may very well be a......

Boeing weighs narrowbody options

For more than a decade, aircraft development has been pointed towards long-range widebody aircraft - the Airbus A380 and A350 and the Boeing 787 and 777 - but attention shifted to the narrowbody market with the launch of the Airbus A320neo. Boeing must now decide how to chart a way forward faced with......

Boeing Explores Options For 737 Successor

Memories of program mistakes are weighing on Boeing as it considers the timing of whether to re-engine or replace the 737 Next Generation family.

Two weeks ago, when Boeing CEO James McNerney told analysts that the company’s “current bias is not to re-engine [but] to move to an all-new airplane,” his comments were taken by some to mean that a new airplane is on the way. In fact, he was reiterating Boeing’s view that it cannot find a......

Boeing admits concern over new entrant narrowbody manufacturers

Recent pronouncements by Boeing chief executive Jim McNerney that the airframer prefers to take a clean-sheet approach to the next-generation narrowbody are underpinned to a degree by a genuine concern about new entrant aircraft from Bombardier and Comac of China.

Pointing specifically to Comac's aggressiveness with its C919 narrowbody and the......

Boeing's McNerney: "We're going to do a new airplane"

Boeing will replace its 737 rather than outfitting the single-aisle workhorse with new engines, company President Chairman and Chief Executive Jim McNerney said Thursday.

"We're going to do a new airplane," McNerney said at the Cowen Aerospace/Defense Conference in New York.

He then qualified this a bit, saying: "We're not done evaluating this whole situation yet, but our current bias is to not re-engine, is to move to a whole new airplane at the......
