Why the PW GTF will Trump the CFM Leap-X: Innovation

The first two of the next generation of new aircraft engines are preparing to enter service, with different technologies. The PW GTF has solved the problem of introducing a gearbox into large engines without a significant weight penalty, enabling the engine to run slower, cooler, and more efficient than its competition with lower maintenance costs and higher reliability. The GTF is the first ultra high bypass ratio turbofan, and represents a major breakthrough over existing technology.

A competitive comparison between the Pratt & Whitney PurePower geared turbofan engine (GTF) and the CFM International Leap-X indicates a significant difference in technology among the competitors for the next generation of engines to power narrow body aircraft. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies, while CFM International is a joint venture between GE and SAFRAN through its SNECMA business unit.

So far, among manufacturers, PW is winning the battle......
