Boeing will replace its 737 with a new airliner, rather than outfitting the 737 with new engines, according to a new Wall Street prediction.
"We believe Boeing will be announcing a new narrowbody replacement to the well-worn and highly popular 737 instead of the less costly, but inferior solution of re-engining," Morgan Stanley analysts, led by Heidi Wood, wrote in a note to investors Wednesday.
This means spending about $13 billion in research and development, compared with $2 billion to $3 billion for re-engining, they wrote. The analysts predicted a launch of the new aircraft program in 2012, with entry into service in 2017 or 2018.
