Wisdom of Snecma’s Choice of SaM 146 Engine over GEnx Still Debatable

Snecma formed its joint venture with NPO Saturn six years ago to develop the Powerjet SaM 146 engine for the Sukhoi Superjet 100. It simultaneously declined GE’s offer to take a stake in the GEnx, which powers the Boeing 787 and 747-8.

Certification this past summer by EASA and the Russian authorities of the Powerjet SaM 146 engine no doubt marked an important milestone in Franco-Russian industrial cooperation. Snemca looks beyond Superjet for Sam146 applications

Snecma is examining additional markets for the PowerJet SaM146 engine following its certification in Europe, as it aims to produce up to 50 of the powerplants in 2011.

The manufacturer has designed the SaM146 for the Sukhoi Superjet 100, but Snecma chief executive Philippe Petitcolin says the company is looking at other new programme options.
