Airbus delivers the first A380 to Lufthansa

Lufthansa has taken delivery of the first of 15 Airbus A380s ordered, with three more to join the fleet in 2010. Lufthansa will deploy its new flagship aircraft on routes to Tokyo, Beijing and Johannesburg.
During the handover ceremony in Hamburg, Lufthansa unveiled its new First Class cabin with eight generous seats on the upper deck. Lufthansa’s A380s are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.
“With the A380 Lufthansa today receives its new flagship. The A380 is the most modern and environmentally friendly airliner today. It’s also exceptionally quiet, and that will make the A380 the preferred aircraft at metropolises such as London, New York, Tokyo and of course Frankfurt airport. While Lufthansa passengers will enjoy more space in all classes and the unique cabin comfort, the airline will profit from the unprecedented efficiency of the A380,” said Airbus President and CEO Tom Enders. “I thank Lufthansa for the excellent co-operation during the design and certification process of the A380.”

Feature: NordLB lending for 30 years

AIRFINANCE JOURNAL ARTICLE – PAID SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED FOR FULL ACCESS
NordLB's head of aircraft finance, Harald Brauns, speaks about the bank's anti-cyclical strategy and it's 30-year commitment to aviation clients.
When NordLB first started financing aircraft in the mid-1980s it began with a couple of A300-600Rs for American Airlines. Twenty-five years later, the German bank, which has a portfolio of 740 aircraft and €7 billion ($9.4 billion) of aviation exposure, is planning to expand. The airfinance department emerged when partners from shipping transactions asked the bank to join them in aviation transactions. NordLB is one of only a handful of banks still offering commercial loans to finance aircraft. Harald Brauns, its head of aircraft finance, has been there since the beginning. "Aviation within NordLB is my baby," says Brauns. "We had our skills and knowledge in asset finance from the shipping side and thought it would be a good idea to diversify our asset base, so it was a logical step to do aviation transportation."
Through the years Brauns has learned that even good credit airlines fail. Good assets......

Feature: Which freighter is right for you?

AIRFINANCE JOURNAL ARTICLE – PAID SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED FOR FULL ACCESS
Geoff Hearn considers whether new-build freighter aircraft are a good investment compared to converting passenger aircraft.
Competition between new-build freighters and freighter conversions is fierce. Conversions might be cheaper, but new-build aircraft can offer better economics for highly utilized cargo aircraft. The market for new-builds continues to evolve, with Airbus and Boeing both announcing milestones in the development programmes of their factory-built freighters. The European Aviation Safety Agency granted Airbus type certification for the A330-200F on April 9. The European manufacturer has put on hold plans for the A380F, though the company maintains it will still build the aircraft, saying that a freighter model was an integral part of the original concept of the A380 family.
“We will relaunch the freighter version when we are comfortable with the A380 production situation and the market is ready for it," says Jonathan Lesieur, freighter-marketing manager, Airbus. He adds that when the aircraft is relaunched, it will benefit from all the improvements that have been incorporated in the passenger......
